The short answer

A UAE visit visa extension costs AED 600 per extension through ICP (AED 100 application fee plus AED 500 extension fee) for visas issued by Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates. For Dubai-issued visas, GDRFA Dubai charges AED 600 plus 5% VAT, plus AED 10 Knowledge Dirham, AED 10 Innovation Dirham and an AED 500 inside-country fee when the visitor is already in the UAE. Tourist and visit permits can be extended up to a total stay of 120 days, relative and friend visits up to 180 days, and overstaying costs AED 50 per day. Only the authority that issued the visa can extend it, and only from inside the UAE before the current stay ends. Hotels and airlines cannot extend a visa for you.

Two different extensions

The word "extension" covers two things on the ICP cards. The first is extending the entry validity of a permit you have not yet used: the 60-day window to enter can be extended for a similar period, and the ICP extension card lists AED 50 for it. The second, and the one most people mean, is extending your permitted stay once you are inside the UAE. This page is mainly about the second.

The rule that decides everything is the cap for your permit type. The ICP card sets it by category, and GDRFA Dubai's tourist card uses the same 120-day total.

Fees the authorities state

flydubai's page describes the practical pattern for its customers: visas "can be extended twice", each extension allowing "an additional 30 days without exiting the country". That is consistent with a 60-day tourist visa reaching the 120-day cap.

How to extend

  1. Check which authority issued the visa. The permit shows ICP or GDRFA Dubai. Then check the cap for your permit type and count the days you have already used.
  2. Apply before the current stay ends. ICP and GDRFA both process extensions only while the permit is valid. Hotels and airlines do not extend visas.
  3. For ICP visas, log in to ICP Smart Services with UAE Pass, open Visa Extension, upload the passport, photo and the documents used at issuance, and pay AED 100 plus AED 500. ICP lists two days as the completion time.
  4. For Dubai visas, log in to GDRFA Dubai smart services with UAE Pass or a username, or go to an Amer centre, upload the passport copy and pay. GDRFA lists 48 hours. For tourist visas, the accredited tourism office that issued the visa submits the extension.
  5. Keep the approval and the new expiry date. Count days, not extensions, against the cap.
  6. Leave or change status before the extended date. If you are moving to residence, the ICP residence card describes a change-of-status request for AED 500 so you can complete residence without leaving.

What you need: a passport valid for the stay; a recent personal photo (ICP); the documents submitted when the visa was issued (ICP); UAE Pass, or the tourism office or sponsor who issued the visa; a card for the fee.

Overstay fines as stated

The u.ae general-provisions page says "visit, tourist and residence visa overstaying fees have standardised at AED 50 per day". The ICP visa and extension cards list "Expiry of the permitted stay period for the visa holder, or expiration of the entry visa (per day) - 50 AED", and the ICP news release of 25 June 2026 repeats the figure for the listed-national scheme. ICP's cards say the count starts the day after the grace period that applies to that permit type. No grace-period length is published on the cards, so treat the expiry date as the deadline.

Fines are paid online through ICP or GDRFA Dubai, and after paying you must either fix your status or leave. The u.ae FAQ notes visitors can also pay at the airport on departure. If you are close to the 120 or 180-day cap and want to stay, an extension is no longer the route; a change of status to a residence visa, through an employer, family sponsor or your own company, is the usual next step.

Overstay fines accrue daily and the financial guarantee lodged by a sponsor is refundable only if no residency violations have been committed (ICP). An overstay can cost the sponsor their deposit as well as the visitor the fine.

What changed in this review (17 October 2026)

  • GDRFA Dubai fee breakdown. The previous version showed "AED 600 plus VAT". The GDRFA cards list AED 600 + 5% VAT + AED 10 Knowledge Dirham + AED 10 Innovation Dirham + AED 500 inside-country fee; the full breakdown now appears above.
  • Overstay wording. ICP's cards say the AED 50 daily fine runs from the day after the grace period for the permit type, without publishing a length. The previous "no grace period" line is replaced with ICP's wording.
  • Study or training permits (180-day cap), work mission visas (once only) and the non-extendable crew and border permits were added from the ICP card. No 2026 fee change was found; the ICP card is dated 11 December 2024.

What people get wrong

  • Counting extensions instead of days. The cap is on total stay: 120 days for tourist and visit permits, 180 for relative, friend, jobseeker, business and medical permits.
  • Asking the airline or hotel. The ICP card says the permit may be extended 'by the issuing authority'.
  • Assuming the 60-day visa for Indian and listed nationals can be extended. ICP states it is single entry and non-extendable; only the 14-day version is extendable, once.
  • Missing the pre-arrival deadline. An unused permit expires 60 days after issue unless its entry validity is extended.
  • Leaving the extension to the last day. Cards state 48 hours (GDRFA Dubai) and 2 days (ICP) for issuance.

Can I extend a transit visa?

No. u.ae states the 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas are single entry and cannot be extended.

Can a relative's visit visa be extended beyond 120 days?

Yes. ICP and GDRFA both allow relative and friend visit visas up to 180 days in total, which is longer than the 120-day tourist cap.
