UAE visit visa extension: caps, fees and overstay fines as stated
How UAE visit, tourist, relative, jobseeker and medical permits are extended: the ICP Visa Extension card's 120-day and 180-day caps by permit type, the ICP and GDRFA Dubai extension fees, the pre-arrival entry-validity extension and the AED 50 per day overstay fine.
The short answer
Visit visas are extended by the authority that issued them, inside the UAE and before the stay expires. The ICP Visa Extension card allows tourist and visit permits to be extended once or several times up to a total stay of 120 days, and relative or friend, jobseeker, business-exploration and medical permits up to 180 days. ICP lists an application fee of AED 100 plus AED 500 per extension; GDRFA Dubai lists AED 600 plus VAT. Transit visas and the 60-day Indian-national visa cannot be extended. Overstaying costs AED 50 per day.

Two different extensions
The word "extension" covers two things on the ICP cards. The first is extending the entry validity of a permit you have not yet used: the 60-day window to enter can be extended for a similar period, and the ICP extension card lists AED 50 for it. The second, and the one most people mean, is extending your permitted stay once you are inside the UAE. This page is mainly about the second.
The rule that decides everything is the cap for your permit type. The ICP card sets it by category, and GDRFA Dubai's tourist card uses the same 120-day total.
Extension caps by permit type
| Permit type | Extension rule stated | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist or visit entry permit | May be extended by the issuing authority once or multiple times, provided the total duration does not exceed 120 days | ICP Visa Extension card; GDRFA Dubai tourist-extension card |
| Visit visa for a relative or friend | Extendable provided the total duration does not exceed 180 days | ICP Visa Extension card |
| Jobseeker visit visa; business-exploration visit visa | Extendable provided the total duration does not exceed 180 days | ICP Visa Extension card |
| Patient and companion (medical) permit | Extendable up to 180 days in total; companion extension needs a certified medical report | ICP Visa Extension card; GDRFA Dubai |
| 5-year multiple-entry tourist visa | Each 90-day visit may be extended for a similar period, within 180 days in a year | GDRFA Dubai 5-year card; ICP FAQ |
| GCC-resident entry permit | Extendable once for 30 days | u.ae; GDRFA Dubai |
| Indian-national and listed-national visa | 14-day visa may be extended once; 60-day visa is single entry and non-extendable | ICP news 25 Jun 2026 |
| Transit visa (48 or 96 hours) | Cannot be extended | u.ae |
Fees the authorities state
flydubai's page describes the practical pattern for its customers: visas "can be extended twice", each extension allowing "an additional 30 days without exiting the country". That is consistent with a 60-day tourist visa reaching the 120-day cap.
| Item | ICP (six emirates) | GDRFA Dubai |
|---|---|---|
| Application fee for all types of visa extension | AED 100 | Included in card total |
| Extend entry (stay) fee | AED 500 | AED 600 plus VAT |
| Extension of the 14-day Indian-national visa | AED 250 | AED 600 plus VAT (on-arrival extension card) |
| Extension of entry validity before arrival | AED 50 | Not listed on the cards read |
How to extend
- Check the cap for your permit type and count the days you have already used.
- Apply before expiry to the issuing authority: ICP smart services or app (UAE Pass), a typing centre, GDRFA Dubai online, Dubai Now or an Amer centre. Hotels and airlines do not extend visas.
- Pay the extension fee. ICP: AED 100 plus AED 500; GDRFA Dubai: AED 600 plus VAT.
- Keep evidence of the new expiry date and track the status on the authority's page.
- Leave or change status before the extended date. If you are moving to residence, the ICP residence card describes a change-of-status request for AED 500 so you can complete residence without leaving.
Overstay fines as stated
The u.ae general-provisions page says "visit, tourist and residence visa overstaying fees have standardised at AED 50 per day". The ICP visa and extension cards list "Expiry of the permitted stay period for the visa holder, or expiration of the entry visa (per day) - 50 AED", and the ICP news release of 25 June 2026 repeats the figure for the listed-national scheme. The u.ae fees page notes that visa charges are stated on each service card and links to GDRFA Dubai's fines-inquiry service. The official pages we read do not state any grace period for visit visas; do not assume one.
What people get wrong
- Counting extensions instead of days. The cap is on total stay: 120 days for tourist and visit permits, 180 for relative, friend, jobseeker, business and medical permits.
- Asking the airline or hotel. The ICP card says the permit may be extended 'by the issuing authority'.
- Assuming the 60-day visa for Indian and listed nationals can be extended. ICP states it is single entry and non-extendable; only the 14-day version is extendable, once.
- Missing the pre-arrival deadline. An unused permit expires 60 days after issue unless its entry validity is extended.
- Leaving the extension to the last day. Cards state 48 hours (GDRFA Dubai) and 2 days (ICP) for issuance.
Next step
If you are close to a cap and want to stay for work, family or investment, the answer is usually a change of status rather than another extension. Read UAE residence visa or ask us to map the sequence for your case.

Frequently asked questions
How many times can I extend a UAE tourist visa?
The ICP card allows extension once or multiple times as long as the total stay does not exceed 120 days. GDRFA Dubai uses the same 120-day total. flydubai describes two 30-day extensions in practice.
What does a visit visa extension cost?
ICP lists AED 100 application plus AED 500 per extension. GDRFA Dubai lists AED 600 plus VAT. The 14-day Indian-national visa extension is AED 250 at ICP.
Can I extend a visit visa without leaving the UAE?
Yes. Extensions are granted inside the country by the issuing authority before the stay expires, within the cap for the permit type.
Is there a grace period after a visit visa expires?
The official pages we checked do not state one for visit or tourist visas. The AED 50 per day fine applies to overstays. Grace periods described on u.ae relate to residence permits.
Can I extend a transit visa?
No. u.ae states transit visas cannot be extended.
Can a relative's visit visa be extended beyond 120 days?
The ICP Visa Extension card allows relative and friend visit permits to be extended provided the total does not exceed 180 days, which is longer than the 120-day tourist cap.
