UAE Golden Visa (Golden Residence): categories, thresholds and how it works

An independent, source-checked guide to the UAE Golden Visa: every category on the ICP Golden Residency Guide with its official duration and threshold, who applies where (ICP or GDRFA Dubai), what the visa gives you, and where the official pages are silent.

The short answer

The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term residence visa that lasts 5 or 10 years and renews itself, without needing an employer or a family member to sponsor you. ICP, the federal authority that issues visas across most of the UAE, calls it the Golden Residence; it is the same thing. It lets you live, work or study here, sponsor your spouse and children, and stay outside the country longer than the usual six-month limit without losing it. Every category, duration and threshold on this page comes straight from the official ICP guide and the UAE Government portal, and where those sources disagree with each other or with what other websites claim, we tell you plainly.

A visa this valuable attracts a lot of confusing, and sometimes wrong, information online, and it is easy to worry you will apply under the wrong category. We show you only what the official sources say, help you find the one category your evidence already fits, and stay with you through each step.

How it works, step by step

  1. Step 1: Find the category that fits you

You tell us what you hold: property, savings, a salary, a degree or a talent. We match it to the Golden Visa category whose evidence you already have.

  2. Step 2: Gather the one letter that proves your category

Each category rests on a specific letter, such as a property-value letter from the land department. We tell you exactly which one and who issues it.

  3. Step 3: We prepare and submit your applicationWe handle this

We file your nomination or application through ICP or, for Dubai files, GDRFA, the Dubai residency authority, with your documents in order.

  4. Step 4: We arrange your entry if you are abroadWe handle this

If you are outside the UAE, we arrange the multiple-entry permit ICP uses to let you come in and finish the process.

  5. Step 5: We guide your medical, Emirates ID and residenceWe handle this

We take you through the medical test, Emirates ID biometrics and the final residence stamp within the 60-day window.

  6. Step 6: We help you sponsor your familyWe handle this

Once your own residence is issued, we handle the applications for your spouse and children.

What the Golden Visa is, in the authorities' own words

In plain terms, the Golden Visa is the UAE's way of giving people it wants to keep a long, secure stay. The UAE Government portal describes it as "a long-term residence visa which enables foreign talents to live, work or study in the UAE", with four benefits: a renewable residence of 5 or 10 years, no sponsor, the freedom to stay outside the UAE for longer than the six months that would normally cancel a residence visa, and the right to sponsor your family "including spouses and children". The ICP Golden Residency Guide says the same in slightly different words and adds "automatic renewal".

One point of vocabulary: ICP, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security, calls the visa the Golden Residency or Golden Residence; u.ae calls it the Golden visa. They are the same thing, issued under Federal Decree-Law No. 29 of 2021 on Entry and Residence of Foreigners and its Executive Regulations. The category detail on this site comes from the ICP guide and u.ae, not from the regulation text, which was not readable on the legislation portal when we checked.

Every category, with the duration and threshold the official pages state

This table follows the category order and wording of the ICP guide. The duration column is what the ICP guide and the u.ae table say on the review date, not what private websites say. The threshold column is the amount or credential the guide names; where the guide names only a letter and no number, the cell says so.

The real-estate duration. Both official pages list real-estate investors at 5 years and public investors at 10 years. A large number of private websites, and some agents, state 10 years for property. The ICP FAQ also says, generically, that the Golden Visa is valid for 10 years. We treat the category table as controlling and re-check it every 30 days. Before you plan around a duration, run the ICP eligibility check for your own case and keep the result.

Which category fits you: a decision table

Most people who ask about the Golden Visa are not sure which category to apply under, and the categories are not interchangeable. The evidence differs, the issuing body of the key letter differs, and in some cases the duration differs. Use this table to narrow it down, then read the category page.

Where you apply: ICP or GDRFA Dubai

The UAE has one federal immigration law but two front doors. ICP handles visa and residence services for Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA Dubai) handles Dubai files. Both issue Golden residencies; the forms, fee lines and appointment systems differ.

Compiled from ICP and GDRFA Dubai service pages checked 4 Sep 2026. Abu Dhabi also publishes a TAMM journey and an Abu Dhabi Residents Office page, linked from u.ae; we have not yet reviewed those.

What the visa gives you

Four things, on the official wording: residence without a sponsor, renewable and described by ICP as automatic; exemption from the rule that voids a residence after 180 continuous days abroad; the right to sponsor a spouse and children; and a route to employment through a two-year Golden visa holder work permit that an employer obtains from MOHRE. The benefits page sets out each with its condition and lists the benefits people assume that are not on any official page.

Golden Visa or Green visa?

If you are employed or self-employed in the UAE and do not meet a Golden threshold, the Green residence is usually the route to compare. It is also self-sponsored and also exempt from the 180-day absence rule. The table below uses the ICP Green Residence Guide and the ICP Golden Residency Guide, both updated 20 August 2026.

What the official pages do not say

  • Processing time. Not stated. The ICP residence card gives 2 days for the permit-issuance step only; verification, medical and Emirates ID are on top.
  • Total cost. Not stated. ICP publishes individual fee lines; medical, Emirates ID and typing charges are separate.
  • Mortgaged or off-plan property. Not stated. The guide says without loans.
  • A skilled-professional salary threshold of AED 30,000. Not on the ICP guide or u.ae. The only salary figure the guide gives is AED 50,000 for executive directors.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Golden Visa 5 years or 10 years?

Both. The ICP guide and u.ae list 10 years for public investors, exceptional talents, university outstanding students and humanitarian pioneers, and 5 years for real-estate investors, entrepreneurs and high-school outstanding students. The ICP FAQ speaks of 10 years generically; the category table is the controlling text.

Do I need a sponsor or an employer?

No. Both official pages describe the Golden Visa as residence without a sponsor. If you take a job, your employer obtains a Golden visa holder work permit from MOHRE, valid for two years, but your residence does not depend on it.

Can I apply from outside the UAE?

The official pages do not describe an outside-UAE procedure in steps. ICP does publish a service to issue a six-month multiple-entry permit to finalise the procedures of the Golden Residency, extendable once for AED 1,000, which is the mechanism people use. See the application process.

What does it cost?

ICP lists application AED 100, issuance AED 100 per year of validity, and a smart-service fee of AED 100, plus a financial guarantee of AED 3,000 per sponsored family member up to AED 15,000. The GDRFA Dubai note gives AED 2,280 residence fees and AED 575 for the identity card for a five-year Golden residency. No official page publishes a total.

Can I sponsor my parents on a Golden Visa?

The official Golden Visa pages mention spouse and children only. The general family-residence rules allow a resident to sponsor parents on separate conditions; whether Golden holders get different terms is not stated. See family sponsorship.

What is the difference between Golden Residence and Golden Visa?

None in substance. ICP uses Golden Residency and Golden Residence; u.ae uses Golden visa. Both refer to the long-term residence permit under Decree-Law 29 of 2021.
